Dr. Stephen is the founding partner of the “Caldwell Dimmitt Specialty Practice”. His early vision of bringing advanced surgical treatment of periodontal and implant related problems to West Texas has developed into a multi-doctor practice offering a complete spectrum of Periodontal and Implant Surgical Specialty Care to El Paso. His dedication to the field of Periodontics and Implant Surgery has included daily private practice in surgical care, academic faculty positions, indigent medical outreaches, and research related activities. These contributions were recognized by his peers in 2010 when he was the recipient of the Texas Academy of General Dentistry's prestigious “Texas Dentist of the Year” award.
Dr. Caldwell is a native El Pasoan who graduated from the University of Texas at El Paso before attending dental school at the University of Texas Dental Branch at Houston. After practicing general dentistry for a short time in El Paso, he returned to the University of Texas Health Science Center to complete a residency in Periodontal Surgery. At the completion of his advanced training in surgery, Dr. Caldwell and his wife returned to El Paso to open a surgical practice limited to Periodontal Surgery.
Dr. Caldwell and his wife Lilly have four children who were raised in El Paso. His son Greg joined our practice in 2014 after completing his residency in Periodontal and Implant Surgery at the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio. The extended Caldwell family have been residents of El Paso since 1942 and they continue to appreciate the friends, family, and patients that they have grown to love over this extended period of time.
Dr. Caldwell originally limited his practice to Periodontal Surgery, but he returned to school in 1998 to pursue his interest in "Implant Surgery". He started his expanded studies in implant surgery at the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio where he commuted for 12 months, attending their "Preceptorship in Implant Surgery". He followed that program with an extended commute to Detroit, Michigan, where he completed the "Implant Surgery and Prosthetic Implant Programs" at the Misch International Implant Institute. At the completion of the educational program at the Misch Institute, Dr. Caldwell was invited to return to Detroit over the next year for a continued "Fellowship" before being asked to join the Surgical Faculty of the Institute in 2001. He has continued to travel to Orlando, Las Vegas, and Philadelphia where he and the Misch Faculty train dentists and specialists in the field of Advanced Implant Surgery. Dr. Caldwell maintained a faculty position at the Kornberg School of Dentistry at Temple University in Philadelphia through 2016 where he served as an adjunct assistant clinical professor in the department of Periodontics and Implant Surgery.
Dr. Caldwell is a Diplomate of the American Board of Implantology/Implant Dentistry and a Diplomate of the International Congress of Oral Implantology and Implant Dentistry. He has served as a member of the Board of Directors of the American Board of Implantology and as a Board Examiner for the board examination process. This extended experience in the academic aspects of implant surgery has allowed Dr. Caldwell to not only keep up to date in the ever changing field of implant surgery, but has also helped him bring many of these new developments to the West Texas area for treatment of dental patients in our area.
Dr. Caldwell has published and presented various articles related to Periodontics and Implant Reconstructive Bone Grafting. His most recent and involved publication involves his contribution to the newly published textbook “Avoiding Complications in Implant Dentistry”. This is the new comprehensive textbook by Dr. Carl Misch and Randall Resnik. Dr. Caldwell was asked to write the “Bone Grafting Chapter” of the textbook detailing the myriad of complications related to “Bone Grafting in Implant Surgical Treatment”. This project is being followed with a new edition of Misch's “Contemporary Implant Dentistry” where Dr. Caldwell is writing the “Bone Grafting” section of the new textbook. Dr. Resnik and Dr. Caldwell recently presented a two-day seminar in Las Vegas where the new textbook findings were summarized.
Dr. Caldwell is the founder of "El Paso Del Norte Seattle Study Club", a local professional study club for dentists who are involved in advanced continuing education. Dr. Caldwell and his Co-director, Dr. John Purdy have directed a monthly educational program for over 30 dentists in a "year-round program" since 2005, exploring advancements in the field of dentistry and in the pursuit of excellence in the practice of dentistry in the El Paso area. This dedicated study program for our local dentists continues to assure local patients that their own dentist is up to date with changes and advancements in dentistry and that our local dentists are motivated to provide the best care possible to their patients.
Dr. Caldwell has been active in the profession of dentistry in El Paso, Mexico, and on a state wide basis since he started practice. He has served as the President of the El Paso District Dental Society and in various roles in the Texas Dental Association. Dr. Caldwell and his family have not only been active in "Outreach" programs in the border area, but he and Lilly have also participated in the "Christian Hands in Action" ministry where teams provide medical, dental, and eye care to families in the distant pueblas of Northern Mexico. The blending of the border cultures and communities has provided the Caldwell family the opportunity to not only share the joys of our international ties, but it has also provided the family with the opportunity to understand the trials and tribulations that are experienced by needy people on both sides of the border.
Dr. Caldwell spends his free time enjoying outdoor activities in the southwest area where he enjoys fly fishing, snow skiing, wakeboarding, golf, camping, and backpacking. His civic involvement has included service in Boy Scouting where he and his boys were active in Troop 59. He served on the Yucca Council Eagle Scout Board of Review and was active in the local area Order of Arrow activities during those years of scouting. He has served on the St. Clements Parish School Board of Directors and in faculty positions with the El Paso Community College Dental Assisting and Dental Hygiene programs. Dr. Caldwell is a church Lector and is active the church's Men's ACTS retreat programs where he has been a retreat staff member. He has recently served as a “Core Team Member” of the church's “This Man is You” men's spiritual series.
